The Ultimate Guide to Choosing the Right Rug

A rug can make or break a room. Here's how to get it right every time.

A well-chosen rug ties a room together, adds warmth and texture, defines zones in open floor plans, and protects your floors. A poorly chosen one makes everything feel off. The good news: choosing the right rug comes down to three things — size, material, and placement.

Size: The #1 Rule

Rug sizing is where most people go wrong. Here's the definitive guide:

Living Room

  • All legs on: The ideal — a large rug (8x10 or 9x12) where all furniture legs sit on the rug. Creates a unified, polished look.
  • Front legs on: A budget-friendly alternative. The sofa and chairs' front legs rest on the rug while back legs are on the floor. Still looks intentional.
  • No legs on: Only works if the rug is large enough to fill most of the seating area. Small accent rugs in front of a sofa look awkward and out of place.

Dining Room

  • The rug should extend at least 24 inches beyond the table on all sides
  • Chairs must stay on the rug even when pulled out
  • For a 6-person rectangular table, you typically need an 8x10 or 9x12 rug

Bedroom

  • Under the bed: A large rug (8x10 or 9x12) placed under the bed with equal amounts visible on three sides. 18–24 inches of rug showing on each side is ideal.
  • Runners: Two runners on each side of the bed work when a large rug doesn't fit the budget or room shape.
  • At the foot: A 5x8 rug placed at the foot of the bed creates a cozy landing spot and visual anchor.

Material: Match Your Lifestyle

  • Wool: Durable, naturally stain-resistant, soft underfoot. The gold standard for living rooms and bedrooms. Investment price, but lasts decades.
  • Polypropylene (synthetic): Budget-friendly, easy to clean, great for high-traffic areas and families with kids/pets. Many modern designs rival the look of natural fibers.
  • Jute/sisal: Natural texture, casual feel. Perfect for coastal, farmhouse, and bohemian styles. Not the softest underfoot — best in living rooms and dining areas, not bedrooms.
  • Cotton: Soft, affordable, machine-washable options available. Great for kitchens, bathrooms, and kids' rooms. Less durable than wool or synthetic for heavy use.
  • Viscose/silk: Luxurious sheen and softness. Best for low-traffic areas like formal living rooms and bedrooms. Requires professional cleaning.

Pattern & Color Tips

  • Busy room? Choose a solid or subtle pattern rug to ground the space without competing with your furniture and décor.
  • Simple room? A bold pattern rug adds energy and becomes the focal point.
  • Go slightly darker than your floor: A rug that's close to your floor color disappears. Contrast (even subtle contrast) defines the space.
  • Pull colors from elsewhere: Choose a rug that picks up 1–2 accent colors from your throw pillows, artwork, or curtains for a cohesive look.

Rug Pad: Don't Skip It

Every area rug needs a pad underneath. A good rug pad:

  • Prevents slipping (safety first)
  • Adds cushioning and comfort underfoot
  • Extends the rug's life by reducing wear
  • Protects your floors from scratches and dye transfer
  • Keeps the rug from bunching and wrinkling
